Warning this Gonna be Heavy

Here is your warning this gonna be heavy.

I recently had the opportunity to fill back packs with essential items such as shampoo, lotion, socks, band aids and etc.  So you’re probably thinking, okay so?

The backpacks that a group of us filled, they provide hope and promise to women and children who are survivors of human trafficking.

Each backpack offers a survivor a new start; a new hope!

Unsure about human trafficking? It is a serious crime and a violation of human rights.  Human trafficking is recruiting, transporting, transferring and harboring of people, by using force, threats, persuasion,  abuse of power and exploitation.  The exploitation can consist of forcing labors, slavery and prostitution.

ht1

For information and statistics of human trafficking go here http://trackingresourcecenter.org

Did you know that the biggest human trafficking takes place around the United States borders particularly in California harbors, (the highest in the nation!) Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego!

Did you know that the biggest fuel for human trafficking is the internet? The rapid growth of human trafficking is easier than ever due mainly in part to the internet because of the ease of anonymity, this in turn makes the trade of humans particularly women and children effortless.

There are several organizations that support and offer hope to the survivors of human trafficking.  The one that I recently had the opportunity to participate in was www.thesweetspot.org.

A large group of Lemondroppers  affiliated through Young Living Essential oils gathered together in Denver, Colorado to fill 249 back packs for the survivors who have escaped the trafficking and are now making a new start!

249 backpacks filled!

When the victims escape, they escape with nothing but the clothes on their backs, they have nothing!  This is where the www.thesweetspot.org comes in offering the surviving victim a back pack with everyday essentials.  This helps the survivor make a fresh new start and offers hope and promise.  Usually these survivors have never experienced anything new in their life to call their own, imagine the joy that is felt when unzipping their very own back pack!

Each bag = a new start, a new hope!

You can help but how?

Donate-  donate a monetary amount on the www.thesweetspot.org.

Or why not have a friends night and stuff the backpacks while enjoying each other’s company?  All of these items can be found at the dollar store!  Check out www.thesweetspot.org to find out ways to donate and what goes into the backpack.

The holiday season is coming up, lets look for ways to make a difference in other people lives!

Any great organizations that you support? Please post in the comments- I want to know!

Thank you for subscribing to my blog and if you have a backpack stuffing party please comment!

Summertime and Essential Oils Series (Last of the Series)

As Summer winds down and begins to come to a close, I would like to share with you my last blog of this series- Summertime and Essential Oils.

I suspect most of you will enjoy the Autumn weather and the coolness in the air by taking it outside. This is why you need these luminaries in your life!

The luminaries are super easy to make and will keep the pests away, and with an extra-added plus, you can create an ambiance on crisp fall nights while gazing up at the stars, sitting by a fire pit enjoying smores.

I used a fairly cheap decorative bowl that I purchased at the dollar store, but you can use a mason jar (they are all the rage anyway).  I also purchased small floating candles at the dollar store too.

You can make the luminaries- cheap!

Here is what you will need:

2 Mason jars (8 ounces) or 2 decorative glass bowls

20 drops of  lemon-Young Living essential oil

20 drops of lavender- Young Living essential oil

20 drops of cedar wood-Young Living essential oil

20 drops of Thieves blend- Young Living essential oil

10 drops of Citronella- Young Living essential oil

1 lemon sliced

1 lime sliced

Fresh rosemary

1/2 cup of witch hazel or vodka

Water

Small floating  candles

Combine oils first in either a mason jars or glass bowl(s) then add the witch hazel or vodka, add the lime and lemon slices and one fresh rosemary sprig, then slowly add water to fill to your liking. Place the floating candles on top of the water.

There you have it luminaries to keep pests away, and you just created a romantic ambiance too!

Super easy- super cheap! WIN- WIN! Enjoy the outdoors with out pesky pests!

luminaries

Aren’t they gorgeous?

For the last minute summer time “get out of town before the fall” traveling oils, that you simply would not want to leave home without!

Here is a list of must have oils-

Digize- upset tummy from too many burger stops

Thieves- boost your immunity with this oil, be sure to use it before getting on the plane.

Purification essential oil blend- this oil fights odors in a stuffy car while on a road trip, in a cramped airplane, or hotel room. ( really great for stinky feet- you know when someone decides to take their shoes off in a cramped space- Phew wee! How rude too!)

Use lemon essential oil for a quick pick me up, especially for jet lag.  Use in your water 1-2 drops and be sure it is a glass container!  Citrus oils are detoxing, so it is best not to use Styrofoam or plastic.  The citrus will pull the chemicals into water from the plastic or styrofoam container, making the chemicals readily available to drink, this defeats the purpose huh? Always use glass when using citrus oils.

Deep relief blend, this is a coveted blend that continues to go in and out of stock. It is so good that Deep relief is hard to keep on the shelf.  Deep relief is great for a stiff neck, due to being uncomfortable in a plane or for long journeys in a car.  Deep Relief is also great for a tension headache, when the kids are acting out or to help releive that tension headache you may have received when a baby was screaming on the plane 2 rows back.

Hand purifier, I recommend Thieves.  Yes ! you need this especially while having to stop at a rest area or gas station for a restroom break.  Do not leave home without it!  Thieves does not leave the sticky residue or the alcohol like most other main stream brands do. I love the smell!  I can always smell a hint of rosemary on my hands after using Thieves hand purifier.

What about those flights that are bumpy and full or turbulence, or maybe a flight through a storm? Never leave without Stress away oil blend.   Stress away does just what it is supposed to do, take the stress away.  Seriously one of my favorite smells, this oil blend contains a hint of vanilla essence oil.

I would like to mention the Bon Voyage Travel Pack, Young Living has a pre-made travel pack.  This pack has 10 personal care products that are TSA compliant! The pack includes the following items:

Thieves Aroma Bright Toothpaste

Thieves waterless hand purifier

Thieves dental floss

Thieves mouthwash

Young Living Branded toothbrush

Lavender Shampoo

Lavender Conditioner

Cinnamint lip balm

Morning start bath and shower gel

Genesis Hand and Body lotion

Basically everything one would need to “get away!”

Thanks for sticking with me through the Summertime and Essential Oils Series, I look forward to the Fall season!

Desayuno, Sunsets,and Mountains Oh my!

Well, it’s over. DONE. Finished. The vacation I have longed for 3 years has come to a close.  I really couldn’t believe how slow it took for the days to board the plane for our departure to arrive in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and then how quickly it was to leave and come back to Texas, back to reality of cat litter box cleanings, meal planning and actual work.

We had a 7 day, all inclusive stay but honestly I don’t think the days of traveling should be counted as a “stay.”  I takes a whole day to travel, get through on-boarding, passport verification, baggage claims and whole lot of waiting, but it is an adventure right? So here we go, I am going to bore you to tears with my vacation and food pictures. (Not really I hope you enjoy this blog post??)

The all-inclusive accommodations were simply amazing! I could not ask for anything more or even better. We stayed at a chain of Pueblo Benito’s Pacifica.

Here is a picture of the resort where we stayed. It was so beautiful, a swim up bar, Armonia spa, several restaurants with the best food, the beach within footsteps from the rooms (we had an ocean view) and an amazing activities center.

pueblo bonito

Cabo is a resort city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, it is known for its beaches, Lovers Beach (Playa del Amor) and El Arco, a natural archway in sea cliffs.

The terrain here is like nothing I have ever seen except in movies! Traveling from the airport to the resort, the view was simply breath-taking, the Mountains, Pacific ocean on one side, the Sea of Cortez on the other, Cacti that you find in spaghetti westerns  and desert. Oh! Angry trees the trees were so strange they looked so angry, much like the Whomping Tree in Harry Potter (sorry if you are not an HP fan you may not get this reference.)

Here is an “angry tree” this tree is located at the resort, these tress are located throughout the terrain of Cabo, some with leaves, others without, some that looked healthy others looked burned by the sun and the heat. Aren’t they interesting?  Looks angry huh?

angrytree

The meals we consumed were over the top!

Breakfast consists of a buffet style meal, outside as the sun rose from the East.

We were so lucky to be able to spend a Sunday here in Cabo as our resort had a special Champagne Sunday brunch, a fresh juice bar, baked breads, pastries and a rolling tequila bar. I did the best I could to choose healthy, but Hey! Sometimes it is tough when you are on vacation!

breakfst

As I said early the terrain is something I have never seen in my life except in movies. This is the cacti Saguaro.  I was amazed by these cacti they grow super tall and the saguaro cactus can serve as a refuge to wild birds found in this region.

saguaro

See the small, baby Angry trees (actually know as an Elephant Tree) beside the Saguaro?   Cabo has the most diverse ecosystems in the world.  The most fascinating landscapes.

Mountains. Sunsets. Cabo San Lucas has the best I have ever seen!  I tried to make it a point every evening about the same time to capture the sun setting behind the mountains.

sunset

Never had I seen such diverse colors, one evening the horizon was lit with  yellow and orange hues, like you see here, and the next evening the horizon was lit with purple with pink hues. I am telling you God’s creation is truly magnificent!

I experienced for the first time the act of climbing a mountain, it took 1 hour and 20 minutes for me to shred the Cerro De La Z mountain.

zmtn

Best margarita in Cabo San Lucas, Oh it was!

We found this refreshing drink in the market place, right off the marina, in a little store called the Bear cave.  Look at it! The bar tender went as far as making a small sun out of the lime.

margWe ventured into town after visiting the marina and decided to take a water taxi to Lovers Beach. The water taxi dropped us at Lovers Beach and we were able to snorkel, swim and gawk at the sea lions. Yes- sea lions!

Here are some of the pictures from the fun day.

The Arc

A trip to the Red Rocker’s famous cantina, Cabo Wabo, the Red rocker has branded tequila and Sammy Hagar’s tequila is famous here. We spent quite a bit of time here, listening to good ol’ Rock and Roll, having 2 for one drinks with chips and salsa.

cabowabo

Well this sums it up, our vacation to Cabo San Lucas it went rather fast,  I am grateful for the time and the opportunity to spend in this beautiful destination.

I would like to add if you a fair-skinned person like myself, make sure you bring a sun burn soother, here is my recipe for sun burn relief, I prepared it before leaving and it was a life saver in evenings after the day spent in the sun.

I hope you enjoyed this post!

If you are trying to decide if you would like to go to Cabo, here is an excellent blog  to help you decide.  Check out  http://www.allaboutcabo.com

Summertime and Essential Oils Series 2 Buggy annoyances and Sun burn relief

As promised this is Series 2 of Summertime and Essential Oils, featuring Buggy-annoyances and Sunburn relief.

As I begin to get ready for my upcoming vacation in Cabo San Lucas I know that I do not want to have to worry about being bit by mosquitoes, flies and whatever else that may try to get at me while relaxing on the beach.  I remember last time I was on the beach, I didn’t have anything and the flies and mosquitoes ate me alive!

cabo-san-lucas-4

Here is my all natural buggy-annoyance spray using Young living essential oils, yes this stuff really works!  You don’t just have to use it while you are relaxing on the beach, it is also great for camping, hiking or just hanging outside, try this recipe to keep the blood sucking vampires away!

Buggy Annoyances Spray

Here is what you will need:

8 ounce spray bottle

5 ounces water

Witch Hazel

10 drops Purification Essential Oil Blend

10 drops Lemongrass essential oil bugs hate lemongrass!

10 drops Citronella essential oil

Drops Eucalyptus Radiata

10 Drops Thieves Essential Oil Blend

10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil

15 drops lavender

Place all oils in the spray bottle and fill the remainder of the bottle with witch hazel. Now there are several variations of this recipe and it seems that other different combinations of oils work just as well, if you did not have the some of the oils listed here to make this recipe it will still be effective, bugs hate essential oils!  Spray before going outside. Reapply spray as needed for excessive activity, and sweating. Major plus to this spray is that is smells nice, not like chemicals.

Going to Mexico is going to put white skin close to the sun.  Normally before taking a trip to Mexico I “prep” myself by soaking up the sun on the weekends and during the week if I have the time, not this time!

I made ahead of time, homemade sunburn relief.  I would rather use my own sunburn relief than using  store-bought toxic laden sun soothing gels I now what is in my sunburn relief and I the ingredients are not foreign to me, so I just make my own and it takes less than 5 minutes to do so.

Sunburn Relief Gel

Here is what you need:

20 drops of lavender essential oil

10 drops of  peppermint essential oil

1/8 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil

Pure aloe vera

4 ounce mason jar or 4 ounce travel size squeeze bottle

Mix all ingredients and store in the refrigerator for a cooling effect.

If you want another option and do not have the time to make your own or you simply just don’t want to make your own, Young Living has a cooling mist to soothe burned, parched skin called Lavaderm. This smells nice too!

If you are just learning about essential oils and are new to this oily world I highly recommend Young Living Essential oils because of the seed to seal process, and the transparency,is what makes Young Living different from any other Essential oil distributor. There is no other oil distributing company that has a seed to seal process, there is no other company that allows the general public to come to their farms and observe the distillation process.  For more information on the seed to seal process go here http:\\www.seedtoseal.com

The founder of Young Living- Gary Young lives by integrity, for example if a crop that is to be used does not meet the high quality of standards, Gary Young  will not use that particular crop, which sometimes leads to some oils to go out of stock more frequently than others if the high standards of the seed to seal process is not met.

I do my best to live above the wellness line and help support my body to perform its daily functions at the optimal level, essential oils help me do that, it is a lifestyle, a regimen that I rely on and feel it is important, just as much as eating a healthy diet and exercising.

This is my second blog post of a three-part series in the next series I will be covering luminaries (how to make them using Essential oils) and traveling with oils.  So be sure to check back for the rest of the blog posts on Summertime and Essential oils.

Summertime and Essential Oils

Are you ready to learn about Oils and essential oils?

I use Young Living Essential Oils, period.   Why?  Here is my simple reason; because of trust and transparency.

Transparency, trust and seed to seal is what makes Young Living different than any other Essential oil distributor. There is no other oil distributing company that has a seed to seal process, no other company that allows the general public to come to their farms and observe the distillation process.

The founder of Young Living- Gary Young lives by integrity, for example- if a crop that is to be used does not meet the high quality of standards, Gary Young  will not use that particular crop, which sometimes leads to some oils to go out of stock more frequently than others if the high standards of the seed to seal process is not met. Hence Valor going out of stock- Young Living oil users you know what I am talking about!

For more information on Young Living’s Seed to Seal process go here: http://www.seedtoseal.com

My lifestyle is that of a healthy one.  I do my best to live above the wellness line and help support my body to perform its daily functions at the optimal level, essential oils help me do that, it is a lifestyle, a regimen that I rely on and feel it is important, just as much as eating a healthy diet and exercising.

One of my passions is to educate people on Essential oils- I would like to share with you how to incorporate Young Living Essential Oils into your summertime routine.  This is a first blog post of a three part series- in the next two series I will be covering buggy-annoyances, luminaries (how to make them using Essential oils) sun burn relief using Essential oils and traveling with oils.  So be sure to check back for the rest of the blog posts on Summertime and Essential oils.

This series is that of a long winded one- All about water using EO’s. Lets get started!

First let’s start with the importance of hydration-

Water- Hydration is important during the hot summer months.  If our bodies are not hydrated adequately and regular fluids are not consumed during the summer heat it causes problems within our body systems.

Signs and symptoms of dehydration:

Dry mouth

Headache

Vomiting

Irritable

Tiredness

Fever

Delirium

Decrease in urination

Dizziness

The recommended amount of ounces per day is : (8)  8 ounces, 2 liters or half gallon of water per day, this formula used to be a “one size fits all approach” really no single formula can fit everyone, there are so many factors on the “correct” amount of water needed, and the factors that need to be taken into account are health, activity, and your environment.

A more accurate amount to help determine your water daily needs is to use your weight, multiply your weight by 2/3 or 67%, this is how many ounces you will need daily.  If you exercise or do strenuous activity add and additional 12 ounces per every 30 minutes of the activity.  For example if one works out for 1 hour- 12 ounces per every 30 minutes equals 24 ounces extra of water for that day.

You may be asking yourself where do Essential Oil’s fall into place with hydration and water? Consider this, you are getting the benefit of getting hydrated with an added bang!

There are far greater benefits by using EO’s in your water than just hydrating our bodies.

Let’s face it, water can be boring- why not spice it up a bit?

If you are craving flavor in your water why not try adding some Lime essential oil or lemon?

Why not substitute your sugar- filled juices and sodas with “spiked” water using Essential Oils?  By using Essential Oils in your water instead of drinking the designer waters, sodas, and juices that are sugar laden and filled with toxins, try essential oils. By adding essential oils to your water it may help you reduce weight, resist cravings, provide energy, promote clarity and speed up metabolism.

Here are some suggestions of Essential Oils you can add to your water (of course the sky is the limit)

Citrus                    Hots                          The sky is the limit

Lemon                 cinnamon                    lavender

g.fruit                 peppermint                frankincense

lime                    thieves                         spearmint

tangerine         ocotea                           copaiba

citrus fresh

Try these recipes:  For every recipe you will need a water bottle, preferably a 16 fluid ounce or greater water bottle.

  • Just woke up morning recipe: Water bottle 1-2 drops EO Lemon- this will provide energy , alertness and may help to reduce kidney stones.
  • Busy day? Water bottle 2-3 drops lemon, 2-3 drops tangerine this combo supports the anti-inflammatory response

I had garlic for lunch and I need help with energy after lunch blues: Water bottle, 1 drop spearmint, 2-3 drops lemon

Safety and ingesting- Always use a glass water bottle.  Just a FYI glass water bottles tend to be more pricey than plastic.  I found my glass water bottles at discount prices at Marshalls and Starbucks.

The reasoning to always use glass is because citrus oils are considered detoxing, if you use plastic or Styrofoam, the chemicals in the plastic/Styrofoam will leach into your water and you will drink them. YUCK!

If ingesting and new to oils  use 1-2 drops of essential oils, start out slow, do not over-do it.  You could possible send your body into detox mode if you over do this.

Always use 100% therapeutic grade oils (GRAS- generally regarded as safe) such as Young living- do not simply buy your oils at Wally world and expect quality and expect to reap the medicinal benefits of the oil. Most oils that do not have a seed to seal guarantee are filled with toxins, fillers and are not meant to be ingested let alone applied topically to the skin which is the biggest organ of the body and the body’s first protective barrier of defense to pathogens.

Try this Recipe for extra added ZING!

1 fresh lemon- juiced, 1 Lime fresh- juiced  then add 1 drop of Young  Living cinnamon bark, fill the rest of the glass up with water- this is an excellent drink to help with sugar cravings and promote energy.

Make a Peach Cobbler from scratch!

Maybe you spent your weekend relaxing, swimming , road tripping, binge-watching your favorite Netflix series or caravanning your kids to the next activity.

My Saturday was spent with 2 close friends and my hubby at our local Annual Peach Festival in Weatherford Texas .  We headed out rather early because the Texas heat is enough to make you think you are visiting the devil himself in Hell. That being said we wanted to get a head start before it became hot as hades.preparepeaches.jpg

A little history about this historical event, this year 2016 marks the 32nd Annual Peach festival it takes place every second Saturday in July.

It is a great event that the City of Weatherford Texas coordinates along with the Parker County Police Department, Fire fighters, EMS and traffic officers.courthouse

It is a one day event where last year 45,000 folks attended!

There are vendor booths galore filled with boutique clothing, homemade soaps, Texas Vintage items, rustic home furnishings and decor, local honey and pecans that are native to Texas, produce that is locally grown like Parker County Peaches. There were also booths available for pet adoptions , so a lucky dog or cat can have a furr-ever home!kitty2

Food vendors galore, here you can find an extra, extra-large corn dog, homemade potato chips, peach ice cream, peach cobbler, fried oreo’s, beignets, boudin, pork skins (made in front of you) snow cones, peach tea, you name it is here, especially if it is fried you definitely can find it here at the Parker County Peach Festival.friedfoods2

At the Festival there is quite a variety of kid activities. I witnessed a bubble being blown up with an air compressor and a kid inside the bubble, once blown up the kid is pushed into a pool with water where the kiddos can navigate the bubble around in the pool while on top of the water, I thought this was really cool.

We walked the streets and visited many vendor booths and made a few purchases, I made it a point to get my peaches as I do every year. The lines to purchase the peaches were super long, but we found a vendor who didn’t have quite such a long line and I went to picking out my peaches.friedfood

We finished the day out a little before noon, we needed to get out of there to escape the massive crowds of those coming in and to get out of the heat; the Texas heat will zap any life you have right out of you.

I arrived home and knew what I wanted to do with the Peaches, You guessed a Southern Homemade peach cobbler! I would like to share with you the process of making your own Southern Peach Cobbler.

First I gathered my ingredients 2 pounds of peaches, I use fresh (always better for flavor) frozen can be used. I usually go ahead and preheat the oven at the very start of any recipe while I am cooking, preheat the oven to 375 degrees for the dumpling squares, what is that you say?  You will see as we go, it is good yumminess in your cobbler– especially of you like the crust of the cobbler!

Now that you have preheated the oven, slice your peaches and set aside.

You will want to begin making the dough, from scratch!

  1. Add 2 cups of flour into a large mixing bowl, then add the butter flavored shortening, I used a fork and a knife to incorporate the two ingredients together, however a pastry cutter or dough hooks is highly recommended here because this can get rather messy and the dough will stick. But don’t fret if you do not have a pastry cutter or dough hooks, mixing the two ingredients can still be done using a knife and fork.
  2. Once the dough is the constitency of crumbs  add in a 1/3 cup of cup water.
  3. Form the dough into a ball and place back in the mixing bowl with it wrapped in cellophane wrap and refrigerate for 45 min.dough1While the dough is in the fridge, begin go prepare your peaches. I used a stock pot for the process.   Add the sliced peaches to the large stock pot.
  4. Add the water, sugar cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar, on medium heat.

5. Once the mixture begins to bubble, add 1 stick of butter, vanilla ( I make my vanilla from scratch another blog ) and stir, but be careful not to damage the slices of peaches by excess stirring- it can become mushy.

6. Add 3 tablespoons of flour into a small mixing bowl with 1/2 cup water, gently stir into the peach mixture, for thickness, give the stock pot a gentle stir and reduce the heat to low.

7. Remove the dough from the fridge and cut the dough in half , replace the other half back ino the fridge.  Rollout the dough and cut into 1 inch squares. Bake the one inch squares for 10 minutes in 375 degree oven on a cookie sheet.dumplings

8. Pour the peach mixture from the stock pot into a 13×9 inch pan. Once the one inch squares are done fold into the peach mixture.

9. Remove from the refrigerator the other half of the dough and roll out on a flat surface, using a thin coat of flour on your space so that the dough does not stick.

10. Once rolled out cut the dough into strips.

11. Place the dough strips on top of the peach mixture, lattice style. Bake for 40 minutes at 375 degrees.

Let it cool down and serve with vanilla or cinnamon ice cream.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post. The cobbler was super fun to make and more fun to eat!  Not really that pretty but it sure eats good!
